If your scalp feels oily by lunchtime, itches in the evening, or just feels heavy after a day outside, you’re not imagining it. Bangkok is hard on the scalp. Heat, humidity, sweat, pollution and air-conditioning all pile up on the skin under your hair — and a normal shampoo only takes care of the surface.
Why Bangkok is tough on your scalp
- Heat and sweat. Your scalp produces more sebum and sweat in the heat. Mixed together, they clog the follicles and leave hair flat and greasy.
- Humidity. Damp, warm conditions are exactly what the yeast linked to dandruff likes.
- Pollution. City dust settles into oily hair and sticks there.
- Air-conditioning. Going in and out of cold, dry rooms all day can leave the scalp tight and irritated.
- Product buildup. Styling products, dry shampoo and conditioner residue build up when washing is quick and shallow.
What a scalp treatment actually does
A professional scalp treatment is to your scalp what a facial is to your face. It typically:
- Loosens buildup with massage before washing.
- Deep-cleanses with more than one slow wash, working the product into the scalp rather than the hair.
- Rebalances with a conditioning treatment left to absorb.
- Relaxes the muscles of the scalp, neck and shoulders — tension and an uncomfortable scalp often go together.
The difference is noticeable straight away: the scalp feels lighter, cleaner and calmer, and hair sits better for days.
Which treatment for which scalp?
- Oily, heavy or congested scalp → a water-based head spa. Our Head Spa uses a double deep-cleansing wash and Water Halo therapy to clear the scalp properly.
- Dry hair or a tight, dry scalp → an oil-based treatment. The Coconut Oil Hair Spa nourishes instead of deep-cleansing.
- Not sure? Read hair spa or head spa, or simply ask us when you arrive.
When to see a doctor instead
A scalp treatment helps with buildup, oiliness, mild itching and tension. It is not a medical treatment. If you have sudden hair loss, bald patches, painful spots, bleeding, or flaking that doesn’t improve, see a dermatologist first.
How often?
For most people in Bangkok, once a month keeps the scalp in good shape. If you work outdoors, train a lot or use a lot of styling product, every two to three weeks makes a visible difference.
